What Is a Golf Handicap? A Simple Explanation for Beginners

Golf can seem full of numbers at first, and a handicap is one of the words you will hear most often. The simple version is this: a handicap helps golfers of different abilities play fairly against one another.

What the number means

Someone who usually scores well has a lower handicap. Someone newer to the game will have a higher one. The number gives an indication of the score you might be expected to make on a course, so two friends can still have a competitive game even if one has played for years and the other is just starting out.

Do you need one to start?

You do not need a handicap before you start playing. For your first lessons, range visits and casual rounds, forget about it. Focus on making solid contact, learning the basics and enjoying the game.

When you can get one

When you begin playing more regularly, your golf club can help you get an official handicap. Usually this involves returning scores from a few rounds. The system then works out a number based on your results, and it changes as your scoring improves.

A handicap is not a label or a judgement. It is simply a useful way to track your progress and play with other people. If you are new, there is no need to chase a number. Start with the golf itself; the handicap can come later.
