How Long Does 9 Holes of Golf Take? A Beginner’s Guide

If you are planning your first round, one of the most useful things to know is how much time to allow.

For most beginners, 9 holes will take around two hours. It can be a little quicker on a quiet course, or closer to two and a half hours when the course is busy. If you are playing your first ever round, give yourself plenty of breathing room and do not rush.

What affects the time?

The biggest factor is the people in front of you. A full course naturally moves more slowly. Walking rather than using a buggy can add time too, especially on a hilly course. Your own experience matters, but it does not need to make the day stressful. Every new golfer takes extra shots and needs a moment to work out where to go.

How to keep the round relaxed

The best way to keep things moving is simple: be ready when it is your turn, keep an eye on the group ahead, and do not spend too long looking for a lost ball. If you cannot find it after a quick look, drop another ball and carry on.

There is no prize for finishing quickly. The aim of your first 9 holes is to enjoy being on the course, learn how a round feels, and leave wanting to come back. Booking a little extra time afterwards for a drink or a chat is never a bad idea either.
